A new “blogazine” and African related e-commerce site has hit the world wide web, and it looks like it is off to a very promising start. Heritage1960, founded by Enyinne Owunwanne, calls itself a “one stop shop for global African fashion and lifestyle brands.” It got its name from the year 1960 in which 17 African nations gained their independence. Owunwanne says, “I’m passionate about viewing Africa from a global perspective. Heritage1960 is a celebration of freedom, individuality and style. Everything and everyone on Heritage1960 is connected to Africa in some way. This includes African and diaspora designers; brands that manufacture on the continent; those that have a reputable philanthropic arm giving back to Africa and designers who are inspired by Africa, as well as local market finds. I want to convey the diversity and far-reaching influence of African fashion and get away from the expected wax prints and tribal references because it’s so much more than that.” Born in the US to Nigerian parents, and growing up in Kuwait, Owunwanne has traveled and studied in cities all over the world and will surely bring a global perspective to the site. Looking around I got a feel for Heritage1960 and I am already liking what I am seeing, especially since they already had a nice article on AFWNY! We will be keeping an eye out while this site develops and shows us its full potential.
