Her modern interpretations of traditional fabrics and engagement with the communities that produce them classifies this fashion label as one to watch.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/africafashionweek.com\/newyork\/media01\/2013\/10\/DSC_0561.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8483 alignleft lazyload\" alt=\"DSC_0561\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/africafashionweek.com\/newyork\/media01\/2013\/10\/DSC_0561-1024x680.jpg\" width=\"424\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a>From time to time we all have an extreme need for a fresh perspective &#8211; a light bulb to be switched on.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, after discovering\u00a0Mahlet Afework, the founder and designer for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/africafashionweek.com\/newyork\/2012\/04\/the-hub-of-africa-fashion-week\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mafi, in Ethiopia during Adiree &#8216;s partner&#8217;s\u00a0Source Africa \/ Hub of Africa Fashion Week \u00a0event, <\/a>we realized that Mafi was the antidote-\u00a0\u00a0the light to be added to the New York &#8216;s darkening fashion scene- thus our Director&#8217;s need to immediately bring her into New York to showcase.<\/p>\n[nggallery id=204]\n<p>Mafi out of several African fashion labels from the continent, was selected to showcase in New York, being the second Ethiopian designer to showcase in New York- hand selected by \u00a0Ms. \u00a0Adiat Disu,\u00a0\u00a0the director of Adiree, producers of Africa Fashion Week in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to partners at the USAID \/ Compete Africa, we were able to ensure that New York&#8217;s introduction to Mafi would be a success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">[nggallery id=114]\u00a0Her 2012 showcase \u00a0provided New York&#8217;s fashionistas and international visitors \u00a0with light-weight cottons and \u00a0story-telling through colour- with patterns and motifs from Southern and Northern regions of Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p>Her collections has always been about her interpretation of \u00a0Ethiopian culture, a\u00a0fusion of traditional Ethiopian fabrics married with modern perspective.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/africafashionweek.com\/newyork\/media01\/2013\/10\/DSC_0491.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8484 lazyload\" alt=\"DSC_0491\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/africafashionweek.com\/newyork\/media01\/2013\/10\/DSC_0491-300x199.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What makes the bond between traditional fabrics and her modern perspective stronger is her interaction with communities that produce each fabric.
