You&#8217;ve seen them\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adiree.com\/magazine\/mogul\/dashiki-trends-at-new-york-fashion-week\/\">worn by celebrities<\/a> , on the runway at a New York activation of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.africafashionweek.com\"> Africa Fashion Week<\/a> and so often hanging on display at fair-trade-markets.\u00a0 Yet,\u00a0<em>Elle\u00a0<\/em>Canada didn&#8217;t receive the memo. Furious tweeters called out the magazine for being ignorant to dressing that has been &#8220;an integral part of black culture for years. Here&#8217;s what a few tweeters had to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Hi<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ElleCanada\">@ElleCanada<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ensure your social media team is well traveled &amp; educated. The dashiki<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">has BEEN &#8220;IN&#8221;. How<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ignorant?src=hash\">#ignorant<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Hey<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ElleCanada\">@ElleCanada<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">is this a joke? We&#8217;ll borrow the hashtag<\/span>&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/mycultureisnotcouture?src=hash\">#mycultureisnotcouture<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Since when we&#8217;re [sic] dashiki&#8217;s new? My culture is not a trend&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;This is so irritating. NOTHING about a dashiki is new. It&#8217;s been the &#8220;it-item&#8221; in African countries since forever.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Elle Canada showed dashikis from Forever 21 in that post. Forever 21 doesn&#8217;t even call them dashikis. No cultural context.
