To “Dye” for: Haby Diallo Brings a Sexy Fulanese Twist on Traditional Malian Couture to The Runway

Haby Diallo is bringing a sexy and modern twist of Malian culture to Africa Fashion Week New York

New York, NY – June 2012- Haby Diallo will showcase Saturday, July 14th at Africa Fashion Week in New York (AFWNY). AFWNY, a luxury multi-day event produced by Adirée, will take place at the Broad Street Ballroom on July 12th, 13th, 14th in New York City’s financial District.

Born to a seamstress in a royal Fulani family in Mali, Bamako, Haby was quickly submerged into the dressmaking profession spending long hours working under her mother. As she slowly pursued her career in the fashion industry, she decided to attend the COPEC design institute in Bamako, then Dakar, and later Abidjan learning the rudiments of the art of fashion design.

Diallo’s designs consist of a unique fusion of the rich, handmade bogolan fabric (mud cloth) with linen, satin, and muslin. Bogolan is typically Malian, and is a heavy decoction of dye with fermented mud. Haby Diallo makes it a point to put a modern and sexy twist to traditional Malian culture.

Haby Diallo designs have received recognition throughout the continent, and earned invitations to runways, festivals, and annual shows like the Afric Collection, where Haby won first prize for the 2010 design competition.

AFWNY includes runway shows hosting 21+ designers from various countries in Africa and those of the African Diaspora, exhibitions, and industry networking events. Opening designers Francis Hendy, Korto Momolu, and designers like Mafi, Attolle Collection, Geraldo Fashions and others will showcase.
